My Greatest Accomplishment

by Charise Rohm Nulsen

RememberRED is a memoir meme. This week’s assignment was to tell the story, without any trivialization or modesty, of something in your life that you are proud of.

I will immodestly state that I believe I have achieved many accomplishments throughout my thirtysomething years that engender pride, but when faced with the question of choosing the thing in my life that I am most proud of, the decision was incredibly easy.

I am wholeheartedly, unquestionably, and exceptionally most proud of my family.

I am proud that I learned from my mistakes and loved myself enough to let the most amazing man into my heart. My husband is kind, loving, fair, helpful, thoughtful, generous, adorable, fun, intelligent, and respectful – just to name a few of his qualities. I am so proud that I did not settle for anything less in a life partner.

I am proud of my family’s home. We began our life together in a city condo that was perfect for us, and we now live in a house in the woods that fits all of our needs and desires. My husband and I have created a wonderful home for our son to grow up in.

I am proud of my marriage. We’ve had challenging circumstances to deal with at times, and I really believe our relationship has only grown stronger in response. I’ve never once had an inkling of doubt in our ability to make the most of life together, regardless of what is thrown at us.

I am proud of our son. In my eyes, he has been nothing less than perfect since his inception. He is only ten months old, but we already know that he is kind, thoughtful, funny, bright, silly, tender, affectionate, loving, and curious.

I am proud of my parenting. As a mama who does her very best to incorporate natural parenting and green living into our daily lives, I know I often follow a more difficult path, but I love knowing that I am making the right choices for our family by making sure all of my decisions sit right in my head, my heart, and my gut. Regardless of pressure from external sources, I always follow my instincts when it comes to parenting.

I am proud that although I have always been driven to accomplish as much as possible academically and throughout my career, I recognize that I now have the ultimate job for me as a mama. I have let go of the need to advance and allow myself to experience the pure joy of being a stay at home mama.

I am proud that I am so content with my family. Being content is a phrase that I never would have used to describe myself before Baby arrived. Now, I savor every moment, appreciate every day, and live fully in the present thanks to my amazing family and everything they give me.
